Yesterday evening, I proudly came home from the gym after a good workout and washed my hair so that I could embark on the wonderful journey of air-drying. Unfortunately, my-air drying experience left much to be desired.
After applying mousse to my roots and Morrocanoil to my ends, I dried just the front and top part of my hair with a hairdryer to ensure my side part would set properly. Then I put two velcro rollers just at the very front of my hair.
I went to sleep and ended up waking up several times, shivering from the ceiling fan blowing on my wet hair. I made an effort to towel-dry it as best as I could, but alas it was not enough.
My hair looked surprisingly good when I woke up for work. The waves/curls were not frizzy and my hair seemed to have unprecedented bounce to it. I had to blast some sections (mainly the back/ends) with a hairdryer to get the rest of the moisture out, then, I set it in velcro rollers. I used a flat iron to straighten the underneath parts of my hair (they always get the curliest).
I must admit, I was pleased with the results. However, I need to develop a new approach so that I don’t end up with wet hair that makes me shiver all night. Next time, I plan to blow dry all of my roots (front, top and back) and only let my ends air dry. The way I see it, I only wash my hair twice per week, so the damage I inflict on it with my hairdryer isn’t as severe as someone who heat dries daily.
Tomorrow is my long-anticipated micro-trim. I will post pics after my haircut, even though I’m certain it won’t look much different.
Speaking of hair, I just stumbled upon this awesome new pic of VS model Alessandra Ambrosio and I am loving the way her hair is colored…it’s a little but blonde, a little bit brunette.
I also can’t resist posting these gorgeous pics of Kate Beckinsale’s hair. It’s official- If I could have ANY hair (color, cut, style) it would have to be hers. Be still my heart. (Click to see larger: photos from The Skinny Website)

I never washed my hair at night for this reason when I was air-drying. It's just uncomfortable to be damp all night! Try and find that Super Skinny Serum so it will dry a bit faster. I agree AA and KB have amazing hair, love them both too.

Perhaps try showering immediately after coming home from the gym? Then throw pjs on and spend time relaxing, getting a snack, etc etc. The hair will have a little more time to dry then. Like towel dry, then brush it out. 45 mins after that my hair will have most of the water from the roots drip down toward the ends. So then I'll grab my towel again and rub rub rub!
But you poor thing! I'm imagining you shivering at night lol – aw. Your hair may be so dried out it's holding onto the little moisture it gets.
Here's how I towel dry: When towel drying, I wrap the towel around all my hair on one side of my shoulder and twisting as hard as the hair on my head can handle. Then twist in the other direction toward the other shoulder again as hard as I can. This squeezes the excess water from the ends. Then take the towel and rub all over the scalp as hard I you can – getting every square inch of my head. I remove the towel, comb out hair to get rid of knots. by this point, much of the water will run onto the ends again (since removing the knots gives the water a clear path to run down – loling at my metaphors). I then take both ends of the towel and hold on each hand. I sandwich the hair between both sides of the towel and vigorously rub my hands back and forth. The best way I can equate this to is when trying to keep warm and you rub both hands back and forth to create friction. You do the same thing with each side of the towel on the hair sandwiched inbetween. I throw on pjs, read, watch some tv, make a snack, check my mail, etc. And like 45 mins later the ends of my hair are wet again. One final really good rub on the ends and I'm good to get to bed. (People say rubbing the hair with a towel causes split ends. I disagree and say heat causes far more split ends than rubbing with a towel. In addition, rubbing with a towel stimulates the scalp which speeds up hair growth).
but you're right – blow drying far less than you used to is a step in the right direction. The only time I blow dry is if I go to a salon and they do it for me, and it looks great that day, but the next day it feels like straw. The first time I ever got my hair done at a salon they did a beautiful job, and they blow dried it to perfection. So I followed suit, and after about a month my hair started looking like this:

Even worse, it went from feeling as soft as say a kitten, to…well…you know tumbleweeds that go rolling on a desserted town? THAT!! lol
Also, I never wrap the towel like a turban. It doesn't help dry the hair at all – it just keeps the hair damp!

I must ask, how do you only wash your hair twice per week? I am constantly washing mine.. sometimes twice per day. What is your hair routine? Also, what kind of hair curlers do you use? I'm interested in getting some for the volume and wave but have no idea what to get or how to use them!!

To anon:
I only wash my hair twice per week because it does not get oily very quickly. I have fine hair, but I have a lot of it. Also, doing a reallt great blowout makes my hair shape last longer.
If you are washing twice per day, you are stripping your hair of all of its natural oils, which will cause it to overproduce oil. You have to "train" your hair to become used to being washed less often.
The kinds of rollers I use are velcro ones. You can get the at target or sally beauty supply. I use them to create lasting volume in my hair.
Basically, the more you train your hair to last longer without having to wash it, the more your natural oils will regulate. It is the same way when people with sever acne think washing their face all of the time will help get rid of it, when really it creates so much dryness that skin overproduces oil. I hope this helps!
